One of the world’s most renowned orchestras, the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) will perform at the Sibelius Hall in Lahti at 7 pm on Tuesday 13 June 2017. The concert is organized by the Lahti Symphony Orchestra and the soloist will be one of today’s most sought-after musicians, the pianist Yuja Wang, who will perform Johannes Brahms’s Second Piano Concerto. The programme also includes Carl Nielsen’s Fifth Symphony, and the concert will be conducted by the LSO’s conductor laureate, Michael Tilson Thomas, who last conducted in Finland in 1973. The concert at the Sibelius Hall rounds off the LSO’s tour to the Nordic countries (appearing for example on Copenhagen and Malmö) and is the tour’s only concert in Finland. The LSO has visited Finland only twice before, in 1983 and 2014. Ticket sales begin via Ticketmaster and the Sibelius Hall on Wednesday 19 April 2017.
Among the Lahti Symphony Orchestra’s previous guests at the Sibelius Hall have been the Minnesota Orchestra and BBC Symphony Orchestra, and on 1 September 2017 – as part of the orchestra’s annual Sibelius Festival – the Gothenburg Symphony will visit, conducted by Santtu-Matias Rouvali (sold out).
Support at short notice from the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation
As this concert has been arranged at short notice, arranging financing has been a challenge. ‘We approached the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation when we had the opportunity at short notice to bring this élite orchestra to perform at the acoustically outstanding Sibelius Hall’, says Teemu Kirjonen, the Lahti Symphony Orchestra’s general manager. ‘As the Foundation does not have specific deadlines for applications, its acceptance of our plan, via a very flexible decision-making process, allowed us to bring this project to fruition on an exceptionally tight schedule.’

The highly respected magazine Gramophone ranked the London Symphony Orchestra among the world’s best five orchestras. Founded in 1904, the LSO is the oldest symphony orchestra in London and now numbers 95 players. The LSO is a self-governing collective owned by its musicians, and appears regularly all over the world with top conductors and soloists. In September 2017 Sir Simon Rattle will become the orchestra’s music director. The LSO is also well-known for playing the original soundtracks of hundreds of films including Star Wars, Harry Potter and Indiana Jones. The orchestra is actively involved with music education through its LSO Discovery programme, and it has also pioneered live concert recording with its own label, LSO Live.
The New York Times has described the Beijing-born pianist Yuja Wang, who recently turned 30, as ‘one of the best young pianists around’, an opinion shared by many highly regarded media sources all over the world. Wang appears regularly as a recitalist, chamber musician and orchestral soloist at prestigious concert venues with a wide-ranging repertoire from Mozart to Gershwin. Her love for fashion is reflected by her bold choice of concert dress, challenging traditional concert conventions. Wang has been artist-in-residence at the NCPA Concert Hall in Beijing and at the Stockholm Concert Hall, consolidating her relationship with the public through wide-ranging concert appearances.
Michael Tilson Thomas is music director of the San Francisco Symphony, founder and artistic director of the New World Symphony and conductor laureate of the London Symphony Orchestra. Born in Los Angeles, as a young man he worked in his home town, collaborating for example with Stravinsky, Boulez, Stockhausen and Copland on premières of their works. During his long career he has been principal guest conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Los Angeles Philharmonic, and his period as music director of the San Francisco Symphony has already spanned more than two decades. Tilson Thomas has gained numerous prestigious awards; he has made more than 120 recordings and won eleven Grammy Awards.
